Black back notes are some of the rarest and most desirable Silver Certificates ever produced by the United States. A quick review of the population report will reveal that there are only 28 examples total known. A more detailed review of the pop report will reveal that out of the 28 examples known, 14 of them are either rumored to exist with no sales record or permanently impounded in institutional collections. Furthermore, since most of these examples have been overly processed with a washed-out appearance, finding a visually appealing example can be a challenge and is easier said than done. This example is the exception and stands out from the rest. The dark print and overall look of the note is captivating and unlike most $50 black backs, this example faces up well for the grade. PMG mentions “minor repairs” that is difficult to pinpoint through the holder and does little to take away from this rare note. With its superior eye appeal, remarkable pedigree and it being an incredible rarity, $50 Black Backs can be fleeting and exceptionally difficult to secure. With so few examples known, one must not delay when an example finally becomes available for sale.
